The Dawson Elk Valley Ranch is back in the news.

Under the headline “Aging Billionaire Cowboys Are Now Selling Their Iconic American Ranches,” Forbes magazine published a story in September that listed the nation’s nine largest ranches currently on the market. The old Dawson townsite made the list at No. 5 by size (50,000 acres) and No. 6 by asking price ($96 million).

Here is how senior contributor Jim Dobson described the ranch in the article:

“Half the size of the city of Santa Fe, adjoining Ted Turner’s Vermejo Park Ranch, there are over 10,000 elk that roam along the remnants of historic mining operations. High-elevation buttes, mesas, and ridges form a complex of winding canyons over most of the ranch. The Vermejo River runs the 11-mile North-South length of the property. There is an occupied manager’s house and a separate complex of buildings, including a vacant home that houses the occasional hunter or visitor and several operating ranching support buildings.”

As I wrote a few years back, owner Brad Kelley put the Dawson Elk Valley Ranch up for sale in early 2020, part of his portfolio of roughly 500,000 acres of ranchland at a combined asking price of $500 million. The Dawson ranch has been on the market ever since.

I reached out for an update to the MIRR Ranch Group, the Denver-based broker handling the sale, but I was told there was nothing new to report at this time.
